In order to know which target audience my preliminary task aimed at, I needed to research what was suitable for different age groups. I started off by browsing the BBFC site which informed me about the different age ratings which helped me understand the certificate ratings.

My preliminary task is based on a psychological thriller with two male characters, one being a therapist and the other the patient. My production is a 12A according to the guidelines of the British Board of Film Classification as there is no violence or any strong language or sexual violence in my production.

In my film there is only a simple hint of violence through the psychologically disturbed patient who has committed murder. The majority of psychological thrillers are suitable for 15+ due to discriminatory language or behaviour.

Films such as ‘Se7en’ and ‘Psycho’ include strong violence and blood therefore it is rated a 15. Also, psychological thrillers are ranked a 15 or 18 as the themes in this type of genre can only be understood from the over 15 audience. For example, a therapist speaking about sex or someone having a type of mental illness would be put down as using strong language.

My main task would also be ranked a 12A. The BBFC site states that ‘Moderate physical and psychological threat is permitted at 12 or 12A as long as disturbing sequences are not too frequent or sustained.’
