The Strangers also begins with a panning shot of different types of houses, the same could be said for I am Legend where establishing shots are used at the start of the film to set the scene. This is typical of thrillers where you are presented with ordinary situations which later develop to become extraordinary – creating a sense of thrill.

In The Ring, the scene begins with a long shot of the house and a change of scene with two girls in the bedroom watching TV. For my own opening sequence, I was equally inspired to use a panning shot of a house and the next scene moving smoothly into a shot of two boys in the bedroom watching TV to create a calm atmosphere (the calm before the storm).
