As the genre is a thriller, I decided to use special effects of rain to build tension by introducing a dull day – the idea of being trapped indoors.

The whole concept of my narrative is to adhere to conventions of the genre but to also challenge some ideas in order to keep it original. For example, the idea of presenting two boys of very different age groups sitting together watching TV is not a stereotype. This creates a sense of the unordinary with the aim to conform with the conventions of the genre. As these are the type of ingredients that entice a thriller audience.

I also noticed this technique being employed regularly in thrillers. The same could be seen in Psycho in the bathroom scene. The notion of looking at someone is created by the camera angle which builds curiosity for the audience who then feel drawn to the plot.

This is a common technique which immediately creates a sense of discomfort and danger as the character is taken off guard.  In my video, when the two boys are watching TV, they cannot sense the danger that awaits them. The shot from the staircase looking at the door of the room they are in, suggests danger.

In The Woman in Black, I used a point of view shot, which creates the affect that as if the children are looking at them. This was included in one of my shots when the ‘mysterious character’ is looking at the bedroom door; this builds interest as the audience is more drawn in the narrative.

In I am Legend, the protagonist having the sensation of being looked at is seen in the following scenes when he feels that the zombies are looking at him.
